How to Do a Castor Oil Pack: A Simple Guide to Supporting Your Liver

Castor oil packs are one of my favorite gentle detox tools, and one of the easiest to bring into a regular routine. They’re simple, calming, and support your body’s natural ability to process and release toxins. Here’s how to do one, along with a few other ways this practice can support your body beyond the liver.

Choosing Your Castor Oil

Not all castor oil is created equal, and quality matters here. Look for:

• Cold-pressed extra virgin

• Organic

• Unrefined

• Hexane-free

• Stored in a glass bottle - not plastic!

You can find good options on Amazon, but if you have a local apothecary, herbal shop, or wellness store nearby, it’s worth supporting them instead when you can.

What You’ll Need

• Castor oil

• A piece of organic cotton or wool flannel (many castor oil pack kits come with pieces sized for different areas, like the torso, neck, or knee)

• A hot water bottle

• Something to relax with, like a book, since this works best when your body is calm

How to Do a Liver Pack

1. In the evening while you’re winding down, drizzle castor oil onto your cotton flannel and let it soak in for a few minutes.

2. Find your liver: it sits on the right side of your body, tucked just under your ribs.

3. Place the soaked flannel over that area and secure the wrap (You can buy a wrap specifically for castor oil packs or just use some plastic wrap. Placing an old towel underneath you is also a good idea as castor oil will stain).

4. Fill your hot water bottle with warm water and place it over the wrap - the warmth helps the castor oil to penetrate.

5. Relax in this position, ideally while reading or doing something calming, since this works best when your body is in a parasympathetic, rested state rather than stressed or on the go.

6. Leave it on for at least 1-2 hours, or overnight.

7. Store your flannel in a sealed glass container in the refrigerator so you can reuse it.

Many people notice clearer skin as one of the first signs their liver is being supported.

How often: Once a week is a great gentle starting place. If you’re moving through a more intense healing period, you can do this two to three times a week.

Beyond the Liver: Other Ways to Use a Castor Oil Pack

The liver isn’t the only place a castor oil pack can help. A few other ways to use this practice:

• Abdomen: Wonderful for digestion, and especially supportive for women’s reproductive health. Just skip this one during menstruation, and it’s great any other time of the month.

• Thyroid: A smaller pack over the throat area can offer gentle support here.

• Joints or swollen areas: If you have a joint that’s flared up or feeling inflamed, a castor oil pack over that area can help. I’ve personally used mine on my knee during a flare.

• Belly button: Even just a drop or two of castor oil directly in the belly button before bed is a simple way to support digestion if you don’t have time for a full pack.

A Gentle Reminder

Like anything in the detox world, this is a supportive practice, not a cure-all, and it works best as part of a broader picture of caring for your body. If you’re navigating something more complex, like an active health crisis or a condition you’re still trying to understand, it’s worth having support to make sure the tools you’re using are actually the right fit for where your body is at.
